Things to do
About Frigiliana
This charming town, with a population of about 3,000 people, offers picturesque vistas of the Mediterranean, narrow alleyways adorned with ceramic mosaics, and a Moorish old quarter. Below are some sights to explore.
The Old Town: Moorish El Barribarto
The historic part of the village, known as El Barribarto, represents the Moorish quarter. Perched on the mountainside, this higher part of town is characterized by its charming, narrow, and steep streets. It boasts a picturesque street scene with whitewashed houses, blue doors, cobblestoned streets, and vibrant potted plants.
Viewpoints
In a village built on a mountain, you can expect many stunning viewpoints. The elevated areas of Frigiliana offer numerous spots with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the village itself. The most renowned viewpoint, Mirador Frigiliana, is located just outside the village and provides a panoramic view of Frigiliana. Other notable viewpoints include the rooftop of the town hall and various spots within the Moorish quarter.
The Mirador de Santo Cristo is considered the best viewpoint in the old town. However, the most spectacular view can be enjoyed from the mountain summit above the town, where the old Frigiliana Castle once stood. Although little remains of the castle, the vista from the top is well worth the climb.
Casa del Apero
The Casa del Apero is one of the most notable buildings in the village, situated outside the historic center. Dating back to the seventeenth century, it originally served as stables, a shed, and storage for agricultural tools. In the 1990s, the Casa del Apero underwent a comprehensive restoration and was repurposed. Today, it functions as the Casa de Cultura, housing the library, local tourist office, an exhibition space, and an archaeological museum.
Hiking in Frigiliana
Frigiliana offers several hiking routes leading to picturesque locations in the surrounding area. Trails vary in difficulty and length, with shorter hikes taking around 2.5 hours and longer routes extending up to nearly 7 hours. In the heart of Frigiliana, near the fountain in Plaza de las Culturas, you will find a sign detailing various hiking routes. For additional information, you can also consult the local tourist office.
Sierras de Almijara, Tejeda, and Alhama
Frigiliana is situated within the stunning nature reserve known as the Sierras de Almijara, Tejeda, and Alhama. While less well-known compared to other Andalusian nature reserves like Sierra Nevada or Cabo de Gata, this park is a hidden gem worth exploring during your stay in Frigiliana.
Festivals
Frigiliana hosts many annual festivals. Two of the most notable are:
Festival Tres Culturas (Three Cultures) which celebrates the co-existence of Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultures through food, music, art and ancestral traditions. This festival takes place in late August.
Ruta del Arte (Art Route) is a collective exhibition of artists who showcase their works throughout the village, from paintings to photography and sculptures. The event typically takes place in the first week of October.
